After surgery there are follow-ups with the nursing staff at one and two weeks, and Dr Kim sees you during one of them. He describes the first six weeks as the main phase of recovery, after which most swelling and bruising should have settled and normal activity can usually resume. Skin contraction can take up to six months, and recovery varies between people.
What is involved in your recovery as far as follow-ups. So after your surgery, there is a follow-up at the one week mark and also at the two week mark with our nursing staff. Now during either of those follow-up appointments, I will also see you to see how you're progressing. Now generally the first primary phase of recovery is considered to be the first six weeks after surgery.
Now at this stage most of your swelling will be gone. Most of your bruising should be gone and from six weeks on you should be able to resume all normal activities as far as even going to the gym and doing any sort of physical exercise. Now if required we also do a six months followup. Now as far as your swelling is concerned now some people will swell up to about one week postoperatively some people two weeks some people even a little bit beyond that.
Everyone's body is different. how they recover from surgery is also very different. And as far as your final long-term results, that is completed when the skin contraction you get from Vaser liposuction is complete. And that can take up to six months. So realistically six months to achieve your final best possible results from Vaser liposuction procedures.
In this video, Dr Mitchell Kim (MED0001187435, Registered Medical Practitioner: General) explains the follow-ups and the general timeline of recovery after Vaser liposuction. Below is some background to help you understand the topic before you speak with a practitioner.
After your surgery, there is a follow-up with the nursing staff at the one-week mark and again at the two-week mark. Dr Kim says he will also see you during one of those appointments. A six-month follow-up is arranged if required.
Dr Kim describes the first six weeks after surgery as the main phase of recovery. By this stage, he says most swelling and bruising should generally have settled, and from six weeks many people are able to resume normal activities, including the gym, although this varies.
Some people swell for about a week after surgery, some for two weeks, and some a little longer. Dr Kim notes that everyone recovers differently. Skin contraction after Vaser liposuction can take up to six months, so he describes six months as the realistic timeframe for seeing your long-term outcome.
Vaser liposuction is not a treatment for obesity or a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. In general, practitioners may consider people who are in good general health and at a stable weight, who are looking to address specific areas of fat, and who have skin with sufficient elasticity. Suitability can only be determined in a consultation with a registered medical practitioner.
All surgery carries risk. Potential complications include infection, swelling, bruising, scarring, burns, changes in skin sensation, asymmetry or uneven results, fluid accumulation and, in rare cases, blood clots or reactions to anaesthesia. Some people may need further surgery. Recovery times and outcomes vary between individuals. Read more about risks and recovery.
Cosmetic surgery is a serious decision. If you’re considering Vaser liposuction, you will need a referral, preferably from your usual general practitioner, before your consultation. The consultation is the place to discuss your concerns, medical history, options (including not having surgery), risks and costs. Learn more about Vaser liposuction or request a consultation.
