They are administered by registered medical practitioners and nurses at Levant Cosmetic Surgery's Canberra clinic in Bruce, alongside our surgical liposuction and fat transfer procedures.

Treatment areas

Areas of the face dermal fillers may address

Dermal fillers can be used in several areas of the face to address volume loss, asymmetry, and the appearance of folds and lines. Suitability depends on individual anatomy and goals.

Midface

Cheeks

May restore midface volume and provide structural support to the upper face.

02
Lower face

Chin

May improve chin projection and refine the lower-face profile.

03
Lower face

Jawline

May define the jaw contour and address volume loss along the mandibular angle.

04
Periocular - high-risk

Tear troughs (under-eye)

May reduce the appearance of hollowing under the eyes. A high-risk area requiring an experienced injector.

05
Mid-lower face

Nasolabial folds

May soften the appearance of the lines running from the nose to the corners of the mouth.

06
Lower face

Marionette lines

May soften the appearance of the vertical lines running from the corners of the mouth down toward the chin.

Upper face

Temples

May address volume loss in the temple area that can affect the overall facial framework.

The process

What to expect

From your initial consultation through aftercare, every step is overseen by a registered practitioner who tailors the plan to your individual circumstances.

Step 01

Consultation

At your initial consultation, you will meet with a registered medical practitioner or appropriately trained registered nurse. Your medical history, current medications, allergies, and treatment objectives will be reviewed. The practitioner will examine the area you would like to discuss and explain whether dermal filler treatment may be appropriate for you, what it can and cannot achieve, and the alternatives available. Possible risks, side effects, and limitations will be discussed. You will have the opportunity to ask questions before making any decision.

Step 02

Pre-Treatment

If you and your practitioner decide to proceed, you will be given pre-treatment instructions. These typically include:

  • Avoiding blood-thinning medications and supplements for approximately one week prior (alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E) - only on the advice of your prescribing doctor for prescription medications
  • Disclosing any history of cold sores; you may be advised to take prophylactic medication
  • Waiting at least two weeks after a COVID-19 or other vaccination
  • Avoiding other facial treatments (peels, laser, microneedling) in the days leading up to your appointment

It is important to follow your practitioner's individual instructions, which may differ based on your medical history.

Step 03

The Treatment

The treatment area is cleansed and numbed using topical anaesthetic cream and/or ice. Dermal fillers used at Levant Canberra contain a local anaesthetic to support patient comfort during the procedure. The filler is then injected into the deeper layers of the skin using either a fine needle or a blunt-tipped cannula, depending on the area and the practitioner's clinical judgement. Most treatments take 30-60 minutes in total.

You may feel pressure or a brief stinging sensation during the injection. Individual experiences vary.

Step 04

Aftercare & Recovery

Most patients can return to normal activities the same day. Common short-term side effects include mild swelling, bruising, redness, and tenderness at the injection sites, which typically resolve within a few days to a week.

Aftercare guidance typically includes:

  • Applying a cool compress (wrapped, not direct) to reduce swelling
  • Avoiding strenuous exercise for 24 hours
  • Avoiding alcohol and smoking for 24 hours
  • Avoiding heat exposure (saunas, hot showers, direct sun) for 24-48 hours
  • Avoiding pressure on the treated area (sleeping face down, tight glasses if the nose was treated)
  • Avoiding other facial treatments for one to two weeks
  • Attending a follow-up review with your practitioner two to four weeks after treatment

You will receive personalised aftercare instructions from your practitioner.

Suitability

Is dermal filler treatment right for you?

Whether dermal filler treatment may be suitable for you can only be determined in consultation with a registered medical practitioner. In general, practitioners may consider:

Practitioners may consider

  • Adults aged 18 or over
  • People concerned about volume loss, facial asymmetry, or the appearance of folds and lines
  • Individuals in good general health with realistic expectations of what dermal fillers can achieve
  • People who are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Individuals without active skin infection in the proposed treatment area
  • People able to attend a follow-up review two to four weeks after the procedure
  • Individuals who understand that results are temporary and that maintenance treatments are required to preserve outcomes

Dermal filler treatment is generally not suitable for

  • People under the age of 18
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals
  • Anyone with a known allergy to filler components, including hyaluronic acid or lidocaine
  • People with an active skin infection, cold sore, or inflammation in the treatment area
  • Anyone on blood-thinning medication that cannot be safely paused, where bruising risk is significantly increased
  • People with certain autoimmune conditions or a history of hypertrophic scarring (assessed case by case)
  • Anyone seeking results that require surgical intervention rather than injectable treatment

A registered practitioner will discuss your individual circumstances in detail at consultation.

Cost

There is no standard price for dermal filler treatment, as cost depends on the area being treated, the quantity of filler required, and individual anatomy and goals. Australian advertising guidelines for prescription cosmetic injectables prevent us from publicly advertising specific prices.

Risks & recovery

Risks and recovery

Dermal filler treatment is generally well-tolerated, but as with all cosmetic procedures, it carries risks. Possible side effects and complications include bruising, swelling, lumps or nodules, asymmetry or overcorrection, allergic reaction, infection, vascular complications, migration of filler, and reactivation of cold sores in patients prone to herpes simplex.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about dermal fillers in Canberra

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are an injectable hyaluronic acid-based gel used to address facial volume loss and the appearance of folds and lines. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found in the skin that binds water and supports skin hydration. As a prescription medicine, dermal fillers can only be administered by a registered medical practitioner or appropriately trained registered nurse following a consultation.

Which areas of the face can dermal fillers be used in?

Dermal fillers may be used to address volume loss or soften the appearance of lines in areas including the cheeks, chin, jawline, tear troughs, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and temples. For lip enhancement specifically, see our Lip Fillers Canberra page. Suitability depends on individual anatomy and goals, and is assessed at consultation.

How long do dermal filler results last?

The duration of results varies depending on the type of filler used, the area treated, and individual factors such as skin type, age, and metabolism. In general, dermal filler results may last between nine months and two years. Lip filler results tend to be shorter, typically around six months. Maintenance treatments are required to preserve outcomes.

Is the treatment painful?

A topical numbing cream is applied before the procedure, and the dermal fillers used at our clinic contain a local anaesthetic to support patient comfort. You may feel pressure or a brief stinging sensation during the injection. Individual experiences vary.

How much does dermal filler treatment cost in Canberra?

There is no standard price for dermal filler treatment, and Australian advertising guidelines prevent us from publicly advertising prices for prescription cosmetic injectables. A written, itemised quote is provided after your consultation. The quote will include the cost per syringe of filler and any associated consultation or follow-up fees.

Which brand of dermal filler does Levant Canberra use?

Dermal fillers are a prescription medicine, and Australian medical advertising guidelines prevent us from publicly disclosing the specific brands we use. Your treating practitioner can discuss the product options available during your consultation.

Can dermal filler results be reversed?

Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can generally be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which is administered by injection. Your practitioner can discuss this option if needed.

What's the difference between dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections?

Dermal fillers add volume to areas of the face that have lost it, and may soften the appearance of static lines. Anti-wrinkle injections work differently - they relax the facial muscles responsible for dynamic lines (such as frown lines and crow's feet) and do not add volume. The two treatments are sometimes discussed together at consultation, depending on a patient's individual concerns.

Are dermal fillers safe?

Dermal fillers carry risks like all cosmetic procedures, including bruising, swelling, lumps, asymmetry, infection, and rare but serious vascular complications. Risk is reduced when treatment is performed by an experienced, registered practitioner after an appropriate consultation. Your specific risks will be discussed in full at your consultation.

Do I need a GP referral?

A GP referral is not required for a non-surgical consultation. If you would like to discuss dermal filler treatment, contact our Canberra team to arrange a consultation directly.
