Consultation-first information

This page provides general information to support patients in Adelaide who are considering a consultation about dermal filler treatment. It is not promotional content for any specific medicine, product, or brand. Decisions about treatments involving prescription medicines are made by a registered health practitioner in consultation with each individual patient.

Consultations at Levant Adelaide

Levant Cosmetic Surgery's Adelaide clinic offers consultations on dermal filler treatment with registered medical practitioners and appropriately trained registered nurses, alongside our surgical liposuction, fat transfer and other cosmetic procedures. A real-time, in-person consultation is required before any prescription medicine can be considered for an individual patient.

This page is informational. It does not replace personalised medical advice. During your consultation, a registered practitioner will review your medical history, examine the areas you would like to discuss, and explain the options that may or may not be suitable for you — including expected outcomes, recovery, limitations, and known risks. A written, itemised quote is provided afterwards. Prices are not advertised publicly.

Concerns commonly discussed at dermal filler consultations

Dermal filler is used in several areas of the face. Each area is assessed separately at consultation, and suitability depends on individual anatomy, skin condition, and goals.

Cheeks — Restoring volume to the cheekbone area or midface, which can lose definition with age.

Chin — Adding projection or definition to a recessed chin, or balancing the lower face.

Jawline — Defining the jaw, softening jowls, or contouring the lower face.

Tear troughs (under-eye area) — Addressing dark hollows or depressions under the eyes. This is a high-risk area for vascular complications and requires specific practitioner experience.

Nasolabial folds — Softening the appearance of lines that run from the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth.

Marionette lines — Softening the appearance of lines that run downward from the corners of the mouth.

Temples — Adding volume to hollowed temple areas, which can contribute to a tired appearance with age.

Pre-jowl sulcus — Smoothing the small depression that can develop in front of the jowl.

For lip enhancement, see our Lip Fillers Adelaide page. For nasal reshaping, see our Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty Adelaide page.

Suitability for any of the above depends on individual anatomy and goals, assessed in consultation.

What to expect

Step 1 — Consultation

At your initial consultation, you will meet with a registered medical practitioner or appropriately trained registered nurse. Your medical history, current medications, allergies, and treatment objectives will be reviewed. The practitioner will examine the areas you would like to discuss and explain whether dermal filler treatment may be appropriate for you, what it can and cannot achieve, and the alternatives available. Possible risks, side effects, and limitations will be discussed.

Step 2 — Pre-Treatment

If you and your practitioner decide to proceed after consultation, pre-treatment instructions typically include: - Avoiding blood-thinning medications and supplements for approximately one week prior (alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E) — only on the advice of your prescribing doctor for prescription medications - Disclosing any history of cold sores (relevant for perioral filler); you may be advised to take prophylactic antiviral medication - Waiting at least two weeks after a COVID-19 or other vaccination - Avoiding other facial treatments (peels, laser, microneedling) in the days leading up

Step 3 — The Procedure

The treatment areas are cleansed and numbed using topical anaesthetic cream. The products used at our clinic contain a local anaesthetic to support patient comfort. Filler is then injected into the planned areas, using either a fine needle or a blunt-tipped cannula depending on the area and the practitioner's clinical judgement. Most appointments take 30–60 minutes.

You may feel pressure, brief stinging, or mild pinching during the injection. Individual experiences vary.

Step 4 — Aftercare & Recovery

Most patients return to normal activities the same day. Swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the first few days are common. The treated areas typically settle to their final appearance within one to two weeks.

Aftercare guidance typically includes: - Applying a cool compress to reduce swelling - Avoiding strenuous exercise for 24 hours - Avoiding alcohol and smoking for 24 hours - Avoiding heat exposure (saunas, hot showers) for 24–48 hours - Avoiding pressure on the treated areas in the first few days (no face-down sleeping, no facials) - Avoiding other facial treatments for one to two weeks - Attending a follow-up review two to four weeks afterwards

How long results last

Dermal filler results vary in duration depending on the area and the specific product. In general: - Tear trough area: 9–12 months - Cheeks and midface: 12–18 months - Chin and jawline: 18–24 months - Nasolabial folds and marionette lines: 9–15 months - Temples: 12–18 months

Individual factors influence duration, including metabolism, lifestyle, the volume of filler used, and the specific product. Maintenance appointments can be discussed at follow-up consultation.

Hyaluronic acid filler can generally be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase if needed.

Is a consultation right for you?

Whether dermal filler treatment may be suitable for you can only be determined in consultation. In general, practitioners may consider:

  • Adults aged 18 or over
  • People wanting to address facial volume loss, contour, or static lines
  • Individuals in good general health with realistic expectations
  • People who are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Individuals without active skin infection or inflammation in the treatment area
  • People able to attend a follow-up review two to four weeks afterwards
  • Individuals who understand that results are temporary and maintenance is required

Generally not suitable for:

  • People under the age of 18
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals
  • Anyone with a known allergy to filler components, including hyaluronic acid or lidocaine
  • People with an active skin infection or inflammation in the treatment area
  • Anyone on blood-thinning medication that cannot be safely paused
  • People with certain autoimmune conditions or a history of hypertrophic scarring
  • Anyone seeking permanent changes — dermal filler is not permanent

Cost

There is no standard price for dermal filler treatment, as cost depends on the area being treated, the quantity of filler required, and the specific product used. Australian advertising guidelines for prescription cosmetic injectables prevent us from publicly advertising specific prices.

During your consultation, your practitioner will discuss what may be required for your goals and provide a written, itemised quote afterwards. The quote will include the consultation fee (if applicable), the cost per syringe of filler, and any follow-up review fee.

A consultation is required before any treatment can proceed. To discuss what may be involved in your specific situation, contact our Adelaide team to book in.

Risks and recovery

At consultation, your practitioner will discuss the risks specific to your individual situation. Possible side effects and complications include:

  • Bruising, swelling, redness, and tenderness at injection sites (common, usually resolves within days)
  • Lumps or nodules under the skin (uncommon)
  • Asymmetry or overcorrection (usually correctable)
  • Allergic reaction to filler components (rare)
  • Reactivation of cold sores in patients prone to herpes simplex (if perioral area is treated)
  • Infection at the injection site (uncommon)
  • Vascular complications — in rare cases, filler can inadvertently enter a blood vessel, which can lead to serious complications including tissue damage. Risk is elevated in the tear trough, nose, and glabellar areas due to local vascular anatomy
  • Migration of filler outside the intended placement
  • Tyndall effect (a bluish discolouration where filler is placed too superficially, most often seen in the tear trough area)

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about dermal fillers in Adelaide

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are an injectable hyaluronic acid-based gel used to restore volume to areas of the face that have lost it, or to soften the appearance of static lines and folds. As a prescription medicine, they can only be administered by a registered medical practitioner or appropriately trained registered nurse following a consultation.

Which areas of the face can dermal fillers be used in?

Dermal filler is used in areas including the cheeks, chin, jawline, tear troughs, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and temples. Lip enhancement uses a different (softer) product — see our Lip Fillers page. Nasal reshaping is also a specialised procedure — see our Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty page.

How long do dermal filler results last?

Results vary by area. Tear trough filler typically lasts 9–12 months, cheek and midface filler 12–18 months, and chin or jawline filler 18–24 months.

How much do dermal fillers cost in Adelaide?

There is no standard price. Australian advertising guidelines prevent us from publicly advertising prices for prescription cosmetic injectables. Cost depends on the area treated, the quantity of filler used, and the product. A written, itemised quote is provided after your consultation.

Which brand of dermal filler does Levant Adelaide use?

Australian medical advertising guidelines prevent us from publicly disclosing the specific brands we use. Your practitioner can discuss product options at consultation.

Is dermal filler treatment painful?

A topical numbing cream is applied before treatment, and the products used at our clinic contain a local anaesthetic. You may feel pressure, brief stinging, or mild pinching during the injection. Individual experiences vary.

Can dermal filler results be reversed?

Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can generally be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase. Your practitioner can discuss this option at consultation.

Will dermal filler make me look unnatural?

Outcomes depend on the volume of filler used, the placement, and the practitioner's approach. A consultation provides an opportunity to discuss your goals and what is realistic for your individual anatomy.

What's the recovery time?

Most patients return to normal activities the same day. Swelling, bruising, and tenderness typically resolve within several days. Final results settle within one to two weeks.

Do I need a GP referral?

A GP referral is not required for a non-surgical consultation. Contact our Adelaide team to arrange a consultation directly.
