Overly Large Breasts Overview

Individuals with overly large breasts may face a range of challenges that can significantly impact their quality of life. The additional weight of large breasts can lead to chronic pain in the neck, back, and shoulders.  Skin irritation beneath the breast and difficulties with physical activities are also common issues.

What Causes Large Breasts?

The size of someone’s breasts is determined by a combination of factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, body weight, and sometimes medications. For some, large breasts may develop during puberty, while for others, they may increase in size due to weight gain or pregnancy.

How to Make Breasts Smaller

Breast reduction surgery, may involve breast liposuction alone which only removes fat and is performed by a qualified practitioner, or a reduction mammaplasty, which removes excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts and is performed by a specialist surgeon/plastic surgeon.  The goal is to achieve a breast size that alleviates the discomfort associated with overly large breasts.

About Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction with Vaser liposuction is a procedure that reduces breast size, usually by 1-2 cup sizes, but sometimes more in larger breasts. It’s a cosmetic surgery that involves taking out excess fat, whereas a reduction mammoplasty also removes breast tissue and skin. Recovery time varies, with most individuals able to return to work and light activities within 1-2 weeks. Full recovery and the final shape of the breasts may take several months.

Breast Reduction FAQs

What is the difference between breast liposuction and reduction mammoplasty?
Both surgeries make the breasts smaller, however breast liposuction removes only fat from the breasts via small incisions, and can be performed by a liposuction doctor, FRACS Surgeon or Plastic Surgeon. A reduction mammoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure where breast glandular tissue, skin and fat are removed to reduce and reshape the breast, and can only be performed by a FRACS Surgeon or Plastic Surgeon. During your consultation at Levant Cosmetic Surgery your doctor will discuss with you the most suitable treatment option and which doctor can perform your procedure of choice in one of our licensed and accredited day surgery facilities.
What are the risks of breast reduction surgery?
Breast reduction surgery, like any surgical procedure, carries certain risks and potential side effects. As with all medical procedures, risks exist. Our clinic follows comprehensive protocols to promote patient safety and wellbeing. Potential complications include infection, swelling, bruising, scarring, and changes in skin sensation, such as numbness or tingling. There is also a risk of asymmetry or uneven results, fluid accumulation, and, in rare cases, blood clots or adverse reactions to anaesthesia. It’s essential to have this procedure performed by a qualified and experienced professional who can assess your overall health and medical history and discuss all potential risks with you to ensure a well-informed decision.
How much fat can be safely removed during breast reduction?
In Australia, up to five litres of fat can be removed in a single liposuction session. If there's a need to remove more, additional procedures may be necessary. This is a topic to discuss in detail with your doctor during your consultation.
Will my skin be stretched after a breast reduction?
Post-surgery skin tightness varies by individual, largely dependent on your skin's elasticity before the operation. While the vaser liposuction breast reduction procedure aims to improve tightness, results differ from person to person. Those with more elastic skin may see better-tightening outcomes.
Will there be scarring?
Scarring is an inevitable aspect of breast reduction surgery, and will vary with the type of breast reduction surgery chosen - liposuction alone will have smaller scars than a reduction mammoplasty. Regardless, the visibility of scars can diminish over time, and the extent to which they fade will vary among individuals. The techniques used aim to minimise scar visibility as much as possible.
Is the procedure painful?
During the surgery, you will not experience pain due to anaesthesia. Post-operative discomfort is normal but manageable with prescribed pain medication.
What is the recommended age for breast reduction?
The general recommendation is to wait until the age of 18, allowing for full breast development. However, exceptions may be made in cases where individuals experience significant discomfort or quality of life issues due to overly large breasts.
